This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
First, let me say that teaching young children is my passion. Even though my students presently live in a poverty stricken area they are still so eager to learn. My students really enjoy mathematics in which they like to count real life objects. Our class also appreciates learning historical facts and engaging in literature activities. My students are rare but they have contagious personalities that every teacher will grow fund of. When my students are not test tasting food they are asking a million questions.
My Project
Mathematics is the art of viewing the same thing in different ways. My class has been challenged by the school district to show various ways to solve extended response problems. I wonder how will that be possible if they are not exposed to or have access to various strategies and tools to solve these critical thinking math problems in 1st grade. My class is in critical need of Math Instant Learning Centers so that they can collaboratively engage in mathematical problems outside of the traditional math textbook problems. My goal is to actually have math come alive once the writing math component is finished in class by using these tools and counters. I believe math would not seem like such a challenge if my students to be able to navigate, explore and engage in mathematical problems using hands-on tools even after the given math time has expired daily.
