This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The current pandemic has affected my role as a school counselor in a variety of ways. In the school building, I was readily available to assist my elementary grade level students when they were having trouble regulating their social and emotional needs. Currently, my students are at home which can be, for some, a place that does not provide comfort or stability. Many of my resources are stuck at school or written in other projects.
My Project
Recently, our school environment as we know it has changed. Our students and their families are on an emotional roller coaster with the onset of virtual learning. Although our school doors may be temporarily closed, the social and emotional needs of our students and their families are still important, and I am even more dedicated to continuing to support the social and emotional needs of my students, even virtually.
As a school counselor, I am always looking for great resources to encourage mindfulness.
To say I worry about my students would be an understatement.
In our classroom, guidance lessons, and individual counseling, I witnessed first-hand the emotional challenges experienced by my students and their families. In an effort to continue continuity and to support their self-regulation processes, I will use the mindfulness cards to give students ideas of how to self-regulate through the mindfulness process. The emotion LEGO will be used to further show students how every emotion is acceptable.
