My Students

I am a first year teacher teaching math to approximately 250 students in grades 7 and 8 at a public junior high school. Over the past month, I have been getting to know these awesome kids.

If there's one thing that I'm learning it's that every student has their own unique story.

We don't always see a student's particular needs on the surface, and many of them try to hide anything that makes them different from the average, typical middle class student at our school, including situations that may prevent them from having all of the supplies and tools they need.

My Project

During the first unit exam of the year, multiple students in every class came up to me asking if I had calculators they could use. I then counted the students in each class without calculators and found that on average 10 to 15 students per class were working without.

Even without knowing the reasons that each of these students didn't have a calculator, I felt awful that I didn't have the resources to meet all of their needs, and I hated that these student might feel handicapped on the test or hyper-aware that they lacked a tool that other students had.

Having a set of 20 calculators would provide me with enough resources to be confident that every student who needed one could borrow one to work with during each class period and not feel inferior or singled out in any way. It would ensure that they would not be facing another disadvantage on days when we take quizzes and tests. Seventh and eighth grade math students use a calculator in almost every unit of math through the year, and I hope to prevent the situation that I encountered during the first test.
