My students are deaf, hard-of-hearing, and deaf-blind. They have hearing loss ranging from mild to profound. My campus serves as the high school level Regional Day School Program for the Deaf in our area.
Students are bused in from surrounding school districts to receive specialized services such as deaf education teachers, an audiologist, speech pathologist, VI teacher, and sign language interpreters.
Most of our students come from low-income households and many have limited access to language (spoken English or sign language) at home. It is imperative for our students to learn new skills in hands-on, visual ways!
My Project
My students need materials to use with our Cricut and heat press machines at school so they can practice making bags, shirts, and making designs on "fancy" paper. My students learn best by problem solving in hands-on ways. They will be able to learn a new skill that could become marketable for them. (One student, in particular, is interested in opening her own Etsy shop when she graduates so she can make goods for other students with differing abilities. I just LOVED this idea!) This will be a fun way for students to bond and problem solve together!
