My Students

Our city is a vibrant rainbow of individuals from around the world. My students are diverse in every way. They are curious, brave, and smart. They question the world around them and their place in it. It is because of them that the supplies requested in this grant are needed. Their drive to dig deeper into chemistry has led to the development of a brand new class at our school. They are our future change makers. Let's give them the tools, and knowledge, they will need to make our planet a better place to be (or at least figure out how to make life on Mars possible).

My Project

After reading "The Martian", students will investigate how Mark (the main character) was able to survive being left behind on Mars. We will study the science behind his "fixes" and look at the technology he was able to utilize. This grant will allow us to perform three different activities related to his survival on Mars. The solar car kit, hydroelectric kit and the water distillation kit will all mimic challenges that Mark faced on Mars. Our students will learn how to build/use these various kits in order to learn how to harness energy from the sun and water, as well as how to distill water for safe consumption.

What should NASA include on future missions to Mars that would be helpful in the event of an unintentional stranding?

Students will culminate this course in a presentation that will include suggestions for future Mars voyages. They will defend their suggestions using evidence gathered throughout the coursework.

This course is being taught to high school students but they will receive college credit. They will have the opportunity to experience college-level work while still in high school.
