it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a progressive public school with a focus on integrated thematic studies. We are part of a diversity pilot project in NYC and our goal is to make progressive, child-focused education accessible to all. We strive to maintain a racial, ethnic, and economic mix in our student body because we believe integration and equal access benefit everyone.
This year, I am teaching first grade for the first time.
My 23 first-graders are a unique cohort because many of them have not been in a school building for the last year and a half. They will be learning the ABCs at the same time they are learning how to be in school. All the kids returning to classrooms this fall will present a wide range of developmental needs, and I want my classroom to be flexible enough to meet them where they're at!
My Project
Did you know that external classroom noise affects reading and math performance? It's true, and it makes sense! In the case of my classroom, we are situated directly above a Brooklyn expressway.
Because of the pandemic, we are exposed to so much noise: multiple air purifiers humming all day and 5 open windows inviting the expressway din indoors.
The background noise is unbearable and children are constantly asking to borrow the single pair of noise-reduction headphones we currently have.
This project will allow me to have a 1-to-1 student: headphone ratio, so everyone in our class will be able to enjoy the blissful feeling of a calm and quiet learning environment.
