My Students

Have you ever picked up a pencil and begun to draw? For some, it is as natural as breathing, but for others it is a challenge. Leonardo's Sketchbook will have personal meaning and allow each student the chance to practice, question, and journal their ideas and thoughts.

My students are from a culturally diverse population, facing the challenges of young adults in an inner city high school in Tennessee.

Most have lived here their entire lives, but many have come from other countries and are beginning a new life. Many are learning English as a new language. Art is a universal language.

My Project

With a paper cutter, chipboard for the covers, and paint to decorate the cover, Leonardo's Sketchbook will allow students in my art classes the opportunity to create a sketchbook that has personal meaning. They will bind the pages and decorate the cover. The sketchbook will be used to draw, journal, and find answers to problems and be a unique assessment tool to see progress and growth throughout the year.

Creating their own personal sketchbook will enrich student visual vocabularies and spark creative processes unique to each individual student.

A paper cutter would allow me to have paper cut and squared and ready for a project before students arrive.
