My Students
I love my fifth graders! Our Title One school in New York City is comprised of a diverse group of students, a large majority of whom receive free lunch.
Our students are very energetic and have very different learning styles, abilities, and needs.
Many of our students have learning disabilities and some of our students have fallen behind since the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is very important for us to encourage both group work, especially during these times, and independent work so our students can succeed academically and socially. In order to do this, we have to appeal to our students' interests by staying up-to-date with technology and literature. In order to succeed today, we want to help our students overcome the new challenges that the past year and a half has imposed upon them.
My Project
My students need books on 19th century immigration and Westward Expansion for our Lens of History Research Report unit of study. This unit depends upon students beginning the unit with general knowledge of the topic. Our library needs some upgrades! In order to fully support our students in this unit we want to immerse them in a variety of texts to deepen their understanding of 19th century immigration and Westward Expansion. This unit of study was designed to support students' writing of informational texts within a content area study, in this case a social studies unit on immigration and Westward Expansion. We desperately need these texts to facilitate their ongoing research for their research reports.
