My Students
I recently saw a cute meme online, which said, "I disappear into books. What's your superpower?" I could completely relate to this idea, and I want to instill this love of reading in my kindergarten through third grade students. I believe that books have the power to change lives.
In our fast paced and high tech world, my students still love old fashioned books.
Whether we are reading about the life of penguins in Antarctica, or enjoying a fictional tale of a kitten who believes the moon is milk, books capture my students' imaginations. I recently started a lending library using my own meager book collection, and students absolutely love choosing their own book to check out and take home each day. In my high poverty school in Los Angeles, resources for my students can sometimes be minimal, but their desire to learn is just the opposite!
My Project
The books I'm requesting for our lending library range from fairy tale fiction to vocabulary development to topics of scientific understanding. With new books to help my lending library grow, all my students with special needs will be able to select a self chosen book daily. These books will help them develop the crucial background knowledge they need as they grow and learn to master more advanced academic tasks. They will be able to discuss and share the ideas that come to life from these books.
More books for my students mean more time spent thinking.
More time thinking means more learning, and more learning means more growth and engagement for my adorable and hard working students. Helping my students learn a love of reading at this young age will stay with them forever, creating happy and competent students...maybe even superheroes.
