I teach at a public, Colorado elementary school, located in a high-poverty community. Our school is a turnaround school that has shown headline-worthy academic growth over the past few years. We work under the motto, "Happy kids learn more!" and are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure our students' success.
I am a reading interventionist and I work with students who are struggling to learn how to read and write.
I constantly think about ways to better support my students and engage their families in their literacy development.
Research demonstrates how critical it is for teachers to bridge a connection between home and school for students. My students' families want to support them as they learn to read, but sometimes aren't sure how to help. Families often express the struggle of finding "just right" books for their students at the public library, and the cost of purchasing appropriate books for at-home reading is prohibitive for many of our families.
My goal is to provide 4-5 "just right" texts for students to bring home daily to read independently, with their families, or even to their stuffed animals!
Gaining this extra practice with reading at home will help build a stronger home-school connection AND give students critical extra practice with reading skills, promoting their overall achievement and love of literacy!
On behalf of my growing, hard-working readers, thank you so much for considering our project!
