This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Maria Montessori has been quoted as saying, "The greatest sign of success as a teacher is to be able to say, 'The children are now working as if I did not exist.'" Since starting a lending library in my kindergarten through third grade Resource Room, I see my students reading and working in this very independent way daily.

I'm not the only one noticing how involved my students are becoming with their daily independent reading habits, parents are seeing and reporting a difference, too!

One parent recently told me, "I never see my daughter without a book in her hand!" I want to build on our success and offer even more books and educational tools for students and families to borrow each and every day.

My Project

My students have become so enthusiastic about checking out books each night to read with their families. I am slowly building a diverse lending library with selections that motivate and teach. I have asked students and families about their favorite titles and have received excellent feedback about how much interest is being sparked by the act of selecting and reading one's own book each night.

I want to continue to build on the success of my small lending library by adding more of students' favorite titles, as well as Educational Insights interactive books teaching things like fables and phonics.

It's wonderful to see the smiles on my students' faces as they sign out their selections, and tell me, "I can't wait to read this book with my dad tonight!" This project builds a lifetime of love for reading that my students share with their entire family.
