Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are an urban public school serving approximately 800 students from over 12 different countries. Forty-eight percent of our students are English Language Learners (ELL) and speak languages other than English at home. The languages include Spanish, Burmese, Arabic, and Haitian Creole. We are also an English/Spanish Dual Language magnet elementary school.
We never have enough books!
The students love to borrow books from the classroom library, but we never have enough graphic novels to go around.
All our students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Many also stay after school for programs and eat dinner at school. They have lived in poverty, in refugee camps, and in apartments with too many people, yet they arrive at school every day willing to earn an education.
My Project
My students love to borrow books from our classroom library! New titles fly off the shelves and the waitlists for popular books are a mile long. Unfortunately, our school library is not open because of the lack of a media specialist and COVID restriction. Also the public libraries are not within walking distance.
My reading club students are proficient, fervent readers.
They can never get their noses in enough books! They request their favorite authors, series, and characters. Books help them learn about themselves, their community and their world. Books open new possibilities.
