This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are becoming avid readers this year, but many do not have a collection of books of their own at home. I have started this project to provide them with high interest lending library books.
My students are avid readers who are excited about reading.
They love to read non-fiction, Amelia Bedelia and Dr. Seuss books. Many of them come from challenging backgrounds and do not have a library of books at home. They love to read independently and at home. At our school, we encourage our students to read for at least 30 minutes each night. For many students, this is difficult because they have limited books of their own. By providing a lending library, my students will always have plenty to read at home. This will benefit my current group of students and the students I will have for years to come!
My Project
I have selected a variety of high-interest books to place in a classroom lending library. My students actually identified some of their favorite titles and series for me to choose from. They will be able to take home a different book to read at home each night. They will be able to share these books with family members by reading with them. My hope is that my students will become lovers of books and of reading. They will be able to read books at home from a variety of genres and topics.
This project is extremely important as we are trying develop our students into becoming readers who are excited about books.
The best feeling as a teacher seeing a student who has borrowed a book to take home, reading it as s/he walks out the door at dismissal. It's amazing to see students who just can't put books down!
