Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

In the past two years of teaching first grade I've come to see what makes a difference in teaching reading. I'm lucky enough to have a good classroom library, which my students use frequently. Learning, however, takes place in the classroom and at home. Many of my students have few books at home and could use that extra help with books on their level. I can tell who gets help at home, and who has the resources at home, and it always makes a difference. I would like to provide students with the opportunity to check out a baggie of leveled books each week for them to take home and read at night. The books that I'm requesting would be lent to them on a weekly basis and certainly assist them in becoming better readers. With your help these students will get an opportunity to challenge themselves at home, and to learn the value of checking out books and taking care of them. Thank you for your help!
