it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There is a Chinese proverb that says, "To listen well, is as powerful a means of influence as to talk well, and is as essential to all true conversation."
My students are in fifth grade in the Bronx, NY.
My class is comprised of motivated boys and girls who truly enjoy conversation. Thirty percent of them are English language learners, with cultures ranging from the Dominican Republic all the way to Africa. Our school is one of the oldest schools in NY (over 100 years old), rich in history.
My Project
Listening Centers provide a place for groups of students to hear recordings of texts played aloud. Such centers will help my students build sight vocabulary and expose them to a variety of genres. By listening to grade level texts, students will hear a model of the phrasing and fluency and apply those skills when reading independently. They will also be able to make connections to other content areas. In addition, my English language learners will improve pronunciation and grammar skills.
Listening centers provide many paths to English fluency and reading comprehension.
By being able to listen, we are able to effectively make sense of what another person is saying. With donations to this project, I hope to enhance my students' understanding and overall abilities in life. I also hope that it becomes another helpful tool towards college and career readiness.
