My Students

My scholars are a lively group of 5th graders that live in a rural community in Hawaii. Students living in these areas often have limited resources and experiences that are usually available students their age living in the United States.

Many of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes and have limited resources available to them for enrichment and enjoyment outside of school.

These scholars amaze me each day when they are focused on what they are learning, when they are engaged in the lessons, and when they are excited about what they will learn about next.

My Project

During our Hawaiian Studies Class, my 5th-grade scholars learn about the History of the Hawaiian islands through songs, chants, poetry and learning to dance hula. In May, our school celebrates May Day - a culminating event celebrating a Hawaiian Cultural and History. For our 5th grade scholars, it is even more special because they also represent the islands of the Hawaiian chain in the school court. Our scholars make leis, their court costumes, and dance a special hula.

By donating to this project, you will help purchase the supplies needed to make a lei for each 5th-grade scholar in our school.

In lieu of fresh flowers, the scholars will be assembling their leis with red and yellow eyelash yarn and kukui nuts. This lei will be assembled during Hawaiian Studies class and worn during the May Day School and Family event. School budget cuts make it difficult to find funding for all supplies necessary for this event. Donating to this project will make it possible for all 5th graders to make their own special May Day lei!
