Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into class every day full of wonder, full of energy, and full of resilience. Each day in the classroom is a chance to shine and start fresh no matter what outside distractions may await them at home or in their community. I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything.
I teach at a Title I school in Massachusetts, where 61% percent of our students are considered economically disadvantaged.
A handful of students receive food for the weekend and we have Catie's Closet on hand for students that need clothing. We have students from a variety of backgrounds. We have students that have just arrived in the United States, special education students, students with visual and auditory deficits, and students with trauma. My students are so much more than these descriptions. These amazing kids just want a chance, a glimpse into a future where they are allowed to dream big!
My Project
As we head back to full in person learning, we now have the large task of keeping social distancing alive and well and making learning fun and meaningful. Unfortunately, all of my shared supplies, as a specialist, must now be reimagined. Instead of taking away supplies, I would like to rethink the way we use them. With the help of personalized mesh bags, students will be able to get individualized Legos that they can build and imagine with and still maintain sanitation and distancing. The mesh bags will be an easy place to store their supplies and will also provide and opportunity for additional disinfecting without have to take the out of their bags.
I want to create a creative and free thinking space that feels like a warm hug for students when they return next month to in person learning.
It has been way too long to be separated from my students and I want them to know that we can pick up where we left off. I want them to know that even though some things were put on hold, their dreams, passions, and motivations were not! Thank you in advance for you consideration of this project that will affect 500+ students!
