As a language arts teacher at a low-income/high poverty Title I urban school with 80% receiving Free or Reduced lunch, I know that my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom that distract from their learning. Many of our students are English language learners who need extra support and assistance.
Providing students with high-interest, engaging lessons is vital to reach students in connecting reading and writing to improve their overall literacy skills.
They need the opportunity to be part of their learning through hands-on activities that personalize their education. Students need creative ways such as Lego to create storyboards for story development with the elements of plot development. Create characters whether hero or villain as part of the hero journey archetype.
Students could use Lego to create a character and write the directions on how they constructed the character for another student to recreate...endless possibilities!
My Project
Throughout the year the students have spent a lot of time reading the work a variety of skilled writers. In turn, it's time to tap into their creativity and have them create stories and characters that captivate.
LEGOS are a creative, hands-on, and yes fun way to tap into student artistic talent as they work with their hands and mind to create the setting, characters, and plot of a story that is in their mine through the LEGOS model.
In turn, they can pen or type the story that unfolds from their visual they collaborated to create.
Students who struggle with ideas, would certainly find this process an easy way to think about what they could write about as they create their model with a partner or on their own.
