Last year our school doubled in size and every student gets to visit me in the library once a week for fifty minutes! I’m so lucky! As a first year librarian (at 55 years old), I started a Makerspace where students could have stations and a physical component to their lessons. Friends and family donated puzzles, and Tinker Toys, and other items.
I however, couldn’t afford to get LEGOs and no one sells them at garage sales.
LEGOs are a perfect compliment to books as I can use them for STEM challenges that reinforce the read aloud book I’m focusing on.
When I read the book, “Our Table” by Peter Reynolds, I can have students build me what they think the perfect family table for them looks like. Can it hold a real can of pumpkin? What makes the table perfect, is it the structure or the people around it? What are your unique celebrations like?
The library, books, and LEGOs belong together. Please help me build a strong Makerspace for all 546 students that I see every week. Help me create a safe, comfortable, exciting place that my students want to be in! Help me inspire and motivate PACT kids to love reading for a lifetime!
