I am beyond blessed to teach 30, wonderful bundles of energy who come to school each day ready to learn and have fun. These kids are truly going to one day change the world! However, many of the students come from homes that lack financial stability. Our school is a Title I school, where the majority of the students receive reduced-price or free lunch. Even though the students face hardships at home, they give all they have in order to learn and grow.
Most of the children enter kindergarten with no preschool experience and they do not bring in daily school supplies so I usually provide community supplies that we store in buckets on the students tables.
Many of them start school without knowing letter names or sounds, and some are unable to write the letters. Many also have little to no number sense. This does not dampen their desire to become successful readers and mathematicians. Though there is much to be learned in order to succeed academically, my students do not give up. I am so lucky to be surrounded by such hard-working students every day.
My Project
This fall when students return to school, things are going to look very different and they are now required to have individual school supplies, individual places to store their materials and individual activities because they can no longer share anything due to COVID-19. This year I am challenged to teach 30 kindergarten students that will have to spend the majority of their day at a table behind a desk shield and I need 30 individual STEM bins for my kindergarteners.
The LEGO bricks and minifigures that I have requested will help me to add onto my existing STEM bin collection, and create more STEM bins, so that I will have enough for every student to have one that they can work on during morning work or as an early finisher activity, since they are no longer allowed to go to traditional centers like housekeeping.
