Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I love working with my Dual Language sixth grade students because they are still innocent and quick to find the joy in simple things. Many of them are Latino immigrant children and are VERY appreciative whenever they get an opportunity to break from traditional classwork and do hands-on-activities. During the year of virtual learning, many of my students spent much time alone, and some spent time caring for family members. However, all of them used technology and social media to stay sane and connect with friends and family. Now that we're in back in person at school, I can see how much the pandemic has affected them.
Being farthest from educational justice, many of my students' families relied on social media and technology to help their children deal with the stress and anxiety of virtual learning and social distancing.
I'm very concerned that my students' brain health has been compromised because of the COVID pandemic. I want to increase the synapse connections in their brains because more connections means healthier brains. My students need very healthy brains to succeed in the Dual Language program which is all about academic achievement and rigor. It is my opinion that playing with LEGOS will break my students' addiction to technology, as the only means of entertaining themselves, and improve their brain health because they have to use their imagination and problem solve when playing with LEGOS. Finally, working and building with LEGOS is a great way to self-care because one has to be in the moment to create something fabulous. I've learned from personal experience that being in the present is the best way to deal with anxiety and stress. Muchas gracias for making this project a reality!
