My students need an assortment of LEGO creative bricks, storage containers, 6 brick builder notepad, pencil and eraser sets, plastic baggies and a bucket of soft foam dice.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a pre-kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school in New York City. Our school is located in an area of the South Bronx with a very high concentration of poverty. Most, if not all, of my students are eligible for free lunch. They are a hard working group of first graders who are persistent and determined to do well in school. They are a group of hard workers who need essential resources to help them do their best work.
My Project
"Play is the highest form of research." ~ Albert Einstein.
It's no secret, playing with LEGO bricks builds math and science skills.
With LEGO bricks they are not only building, they are thinking, planning, creating and engineering. For this project, I am requesting LEGO bricks, soft dice and plastic baggies that students can take home to play math games with their families. Each of my students will be able to take home a baggie with soft dice, notepad, pencils and set of LEGO bricks to play 'Subtraction LEGO' with their parents. By playing these math games with their families, my students will be able to create a tower with ten bricks, roll the dice and then subtract within 10. This simple yet powerful hands-on game that my students can play at home with their parents (or families) will help them develop mathematical fluency with numbers and ultimately a mastery of part/part equals whole with the number ten (10). The resources will provide them with increased opportunities to practice and master addition and subtraction facts (at home) by composing and decomposing numbers within ten. My students will use the notepads, pencils and erasers to keep track of and write the subtraction number sentences for the numbers they roll with the dice.
Please consider funding this project to help my students engage in hands-on learning with LEGO bricks to master essential math concepts and skills by playing with and engaging their families in what they are learning at school.
