Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds, with over 80% of our students receiving free lunch, making us a Title I school.
Our school is also an ethnically diverse school in Washington, DC.
Students speak different languages at home, including English, Spanish, Amharic, and French. Since our students are so diverse, I'd also like for their learning to be diverse so we're always doing projects and different activities to expand their knowledge. We're lucky to be in the lively city of Washington, DC so there are many opportunities for us to explore our city and learn from our beautiful community.
My Project
DHES is a DCPS school that serves students in grades Pk3 to fifth grade. We pride ourselves on our diversity, we have diverse staff and student population. Our school aims to assure that every student is afforded the highest educational experience and opportunities to succeed in their continued educational pursuits and into their chosen professions into adulthood.
This present proposal is to provide additional LEGO resources to teach additional groups of students who are asking to participate and benefit from this ongoing and successful program.
This science and technology program infuse a level of learning engineering and mathematics through hands-on activities, to students interested in participating using LEGO blocks and manipulatives. Yes, LEGOs can be fun, however they are not used here for play, but used to accomplish planned projects with challenging outcomes. Student group members participate in activities that allowed them to hone their innovative solving skills to accomplish challenging grade level activities.
If we are successful in the pursuit of additional LEGO sets, more students will have the opportunity to learn new engineering and mathematics problem solving skills tailored to student grade and skill levels. Project plans and rules have already been developed to guide activities, to give it purpose, and challenging objectives. Students work in groups to improve their communication skills and to learn to work as a team.
