Students in the "highest poverty" category, often do not have opportunities to follow their dreams. I am all about making the impossible possible and their dreams for the future an obtainable reality. My students come from countries around the world. They have traveled from Africa, Asia, South America, and across North America, as children of refugees and families that move frequently, due to low-income earning ability. The unique and difficult experiences of my students are what make my students some of the most powerful and determined young minds you could ever hope to meet.
My students have experienced adversity.
In our classroom, we rise above it. My students are resilient and brilliant. They have incredible leadership abilities. They help each other and understand the power of teamwork. We build a classroom community and care for each other. When one student succeeds, they all celebrate the success achieved by their classmate. These bonds are forged with time, shared tribulation, and the universal truth that every single student in our class has enormous potential.
My Project
This class has amazed me this year with their interest in engineering! They love to build, construct, design, and create. I brought out a set of books about the planets in our solar system, and now they all want to travel to space!
LEGO STEM kits provide crucial opportunities for students to problem-solve, collaborate, build, engineer, and imagine.
The LEGO STEM kits in this project will create a STEAM learning time where students will engage in LEGO STEM teamwork. The Story Tales, Coding Express, Space and Airport Set, World People Set, Storage Solution 6 Pack, and Large DUPLO Building Plates will create an engaging, complete, whole-class immersion experience in LEGO STEM work. I plan to connect the STEM activity involved in this project with writing as students will write about their STEM experience. It also connects to the role-play of reading when we read about the solar system, space travel, world cultures, fairy tales, and the jobs of people in our community. This project also has a strong social-emotional element as students will be required to collaborate as they build, and use team skills when working together on these STEM sets.
