My students are curious, enthusiastic and energetic 3rd-5th graders who have Autism Spectrum Disorders.
My students come from diverse backgrounds, and travel from neighborhoods across Manhattan, Roosevelt Island and Brooklyn to attend our public school in lower Manhattan that specializes in supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
My students come from backgrounds that are vastly underrepresented in STEM careers today. They have incredible zest for learning and creating in spite of significant challenges with communication, gross and fine motor skills, and social skills.
My Project
Using K'Nex, my students have learned to build and design structures, collaborate, and problem solve. They are also beginning to use Visual Coding programs to solve puzzles, design simple games and create digital graphics. Lego WeDo STEM kits would allow my students to combine their love for building and writing code into designing Lego structures and writing more complex computer programs. They will be challenged to solve problems and cultivate their STEM creativity through this work.
Lego WeDo kits will provide invaluable learning opportunities for my students.
The Lego WeDo lessons and materials will support weeks of inquiry-based and hands-on learning, develop their computer programming skills, and propel them into future STEM opportunities!
