I am a 7Th grade science teacher in Austin, TX working at a school where over 90% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Supplies are sometimes hard to come by for the students and they could greatly benefit from a little extra help to make vast gains academically and socially.
LEGO Education has created a life science set of kits that deal with recreating DNA models, chromosomes and Photosynthesis using LEGO. This is a wonderful way for kids to get hands-on experiences to understand the structure and function of our DNA, chromosomes and the process of Photosynthesis. My students are struggling readers and would greatly benefit from using these kits as well and getting the reinforcement reading from the textbook.
LEGO Education has a getting started kit that has 12 student kits and a teacher kit, so all my students will be able to use these kits over and over again and can be used from year to year. The photosynthesis kits will greatly help students with their understanding of the process of photosynthesis, and support my efforts already in place to increase environmental awareness. I have homemade plant incubators and have students grow and harvest plants, but they struggle with understanding the process of photosynthesis. This will help students understand and increase their awareness of why they need to help control and protect the environment they live in.
This opportunity would greatly help students struggling to read and grasp more abstract concepts. I would appreciate any aid in helping my students become better readers, better people and show them anything is possible.
