My students need more STEM opportunities. My students have used Lego’s to construct and explore engineering, but we are in need of Lego accessories which allow them to explore forces and simple machines.
My students are hard-working, inquisitive second-language learners who come from families where Spanish is the primary language. They are taught in a bilingual setting so they can then transfer their academic skills and strategies to learning English Language Arts.
As research has shown, being bilingual is an asset to students, and these students work very hard to make sure they keep their native language while succeeding in English, also.
Students not only learn Spanish language arts, but also English language development, and English language arts.
They are curious, inquisitive, and smart. However, many come from families where their parents did not get a high school education or even speak English, which makes their progress in our educational system harder than for those who come from more privileged backgrounds. Almost 100% of my class is also eligible for free lunch, meaning they have limited funds and do not have access to some resources that more well off students can access.
Are there any kids who don’t love to play with LEGO? If so, they are not in my class! My students love creating, engineering, and using these bricks to problem solve during our STEM Friday’s.
If we are able to have some accessories to make their creations move, my students would have the ability to further explore forces, motion, and simple machines.
These LEGO supplies will increase their ability to problem solve engineering challenges, and could serve as an introduction to other technologies like robotics.
Many of my students need access to STEM materials so they can close the inequity gap in education. These kits would help them make greater gains and become the future problem solvers we need them to become.
