Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students at our school are a special group of middle school students. If you have ever met a middle school student then you know that often they are filled with an amount of energy and curiosity that, if tapped, could power a small town. Many of my students' families struggle to support their child's well being and significant numbers of my students are recent immigrants. Our school is faced with meeting the needs of a diverse student population that is consistently struggling financially and academically at-risk.
This has not hampered our students' eagerness and desire to learn and our teachers' devotion to teach, but our school needs as much help as it can get.
Many of these students struggle to make it to class on time because they are trying to get their younger siblings ready for school. Many of my students are often a major caregiver for their younger siblings.
My Project
I've started a book club with some of the teachers exploring topics and books that some of our students would find interesting. I want to take it a step further and pilot one with my seventh graders.
To have students that are life long readers they have to explore new books for their own personal enjoyment.
I'm picking the book based on it being a hit at another school. After we read this book for enjoyment, I'd like to have other students pick a book they want to read and then have the other students in the book club select a book and present to the others why we should read that book. I also haven't read the book, so I'd like to model with the students how an adult reads a new book.
