Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My Freshman English classes will be embarking on an exciting, end-of-the-year hands-on project focused on exploring racial representation in literature through the creative use of LEGO building. In this project, students will collaboratively revisit short stories written by major, award-winning authors of color. This year, we opted to read and analyze Alexis Sherman’s “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” Langston Hughes’ poem “A Raisin in the Sun,” Amy Tan’s “Two Kinds,” “The Hate You Give,” and “The House on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros.

Instead of traditional literary analysis, students will be tasked with creating LEGO models that represent various aspects of racial representation found within these texts.

Here's how this project integrates STEM:

Engineering and Design Thinking:

Students will engage in engineering and design thinking as they plan, prototype, and build their LEGO models. They will consider factors such as structure, aesthetics, and representation to accurately depict themes and scenes from the literature.

The design process involves problem-solving, spatial reasoning, and understanding of proportions, all fundamental aspects of engineering.

To ensure the success of this project, specific STEM materials are needed:

LEGO bricks and accessories: These materials are essential for students to construct their LEGO models. They provide the building blocks for creativity and exploration.

LEGO baseplates: Baseplates provide a stable foundation for building and allow students to create scenes or landscapes for their models.

LEGO minifigures: Minifigures can represent characters from the literature, enhancing the storytelling aspect of the project.

By integrating STEM principles and using STEM-specific materials, this project provides students with a hands-on, interdisciplinary learning experience.
