Lego Lands for Long Term Learning

My students need Lego brick kits and Lego 2.0 motor kits in order to create a Lego city using multiple types of simple machines. This STEAM project will combine art with coding, engineering, design, and robotics.

My Students

In the school science programs, we strive to use all available materials and supports to help our students grow and thrive in a rigorous educational environment that is aligned to the general education curriculum.

My students are active, inquisitive, hard-working middle school students who have autism. While it is sometimes a struggle for them to access a traditional curriculum, our school works diligently to help them acquire academic and social skills that are as close as possible to grade level. We adapt the curriculum to their individual needs by using visuals, manipulatives, and other hands-on supports and activities on a daily basis and they thrive at our school. The teaching staff and administration work together to come up with creative ways to make certain that all learners do well in our program and receive the education they deserve.

My Project

My students are an enthusiastic group of middle and high school students with autism in the NYC citywide special education district. We offer them a rigorous science curriculum that is aligned to the standards, but the curriculum has to be substantially differentiated with visuals and hands-on activities in order to be accessible to students who often have cognitive, language processing, and other learning challenges.

This project is a hands-on STEM learning experience that will engage every student in design, coding, robotics, and art as they create a Lego city-complete with moving vehicles, people, and buildings.

It will engage these learners and provide them with the opportunity to apply the curricular units on simple machines, energy, and motion in a way that is exciting and creative. It will be a project and lesson they will always remember!
