This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My Prek students come from various areas in NYC. Most are from the East Harlem area, we have some from The Bronx and Queens. The parents and students are so excited to start school. We have a great collaboration with the community and school. The students love to explore the areas of NYC especially Central Park! The students at our school are energetic and empathetic. Our Prek program grows using Social Emotional Learning!
My Project
Children coming into Prek usually have weak or underdeveloped/ under used fine motor skills. The students can get frustrated when they try to use various tools that require good fine motor development. What we do not want is the child to not want to try and use the tools that they will need in the future. We want the students to want to practice using the fine motor skills!
Having children use Legos to gain fine motor muscles is not only fun but necessary!
Building fine motor skills with Lego bricks has been very successful. My previous students have loved using the small sets I have brought in the class centers. I know that having a wider variety of colors and shapes and pieces we will not only make the children want to play with the Legos and strengthen their fine motor muscles but we will expand their imagination!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
