My Students

Many of our students come from a low socioeconomic area. Most arrive at our school by bus after a 30-60 minute ride, and approximately 87% receive free or reduced-price lunch. This student population has not had the same types of experiences to enrich their lives and/learning compared to other student populations in more economically stable areas.

At our school, we like to enhance students' lives through exciting educational experiences!

We love to give our students opportunities they can use to enrich their foundation which will allow them to be successful alongside other students in the 21st Century. Students have expressed that they love exploring and collaborating as they learn in the STEM/Technology Lab.

My Project

Clubs at our school are an enriching part of the week where students choose a club based on their interests.

If they can dream it, they can build it -Madhu Thangavelu

LEGO club is extremely popular! So popular in fact, that I must limit how many attend because I lack the materials necessary to satisfy large groups.

Students who attend LEGO Club work in small groups to solve challenges. These students are gaining experiences that satisfy national standards for mathematical practice; "Students can make sense of problems and persevere in solving them."

When students arrive they are hooked with a topic and then given a challenging problem to solve, or invited to several stations with different problems to solve. Many students initially state, "How do we do that with only LEGOS?" By the end of class, the students are high-fiving and the teacher has snapped a dozen pictures of incredible solution builds based solely on the students' prior knowledge and imagination.

All students that attend are building the necessary skills to be successful in the 21st Century. Students create using critical thinking skills, and they improve communication skills as they collaborate with their peers.
