My Students
I want to support engagement in my special education classroom so that my students love to learn more than ever and can acquire the skills they need to achieve their wildest dreams!
My students range from Kindergarten to 6th grade.
I work with a variety of students with disabilities and each child has unique learning needs. No matter their current skill level, however, each child comes to my classroom ready to learn. I can see their eager desire to learn as they strive to engage with material and seek hands-on opportunties to do so. In our school, I am lucky to work together with their wonderful regular teachers to ensure that every student is receiving the best supports they can, across environments. We truly have a community of learners from staff to students, and we are looking forward to having more resources to increase our success and meet our goals!
My Project
My students have a passion for building with LEGO that can be used to support their development of science, math, technology, and literacy skills. By harnessing their love of LEGO, I can advance their educational opportunity and infuse joy throughout our day.
Whether it is looking at differently sized pieces to find fractions, look for multiplication equations using the arrays of dots, building habitats where animals have adapted to live, or writing about the latest creation they've devised - LEGO has always proven effective at getting students hooked into learning.
However, when there are not enough LEGO pieces, creativity can be stifled and conflict can arise over competing for resources. That's why, this year, I am looking to add enough LEGO for 3-5 students to collaborate and build simultaneously, bringing their most imaginative creations to life. They will develop social and academic skills during their building projects, conversing over their projects, negotiating who gets which pieces, and providing thoughtful feedback to peers to enhance their work.
