Help me give my students with autism greater opportunities to engage with peers, using high interest toys such as the lego city train set which incorporates 2 strong interests and will increase collaborative interactions.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
.
Often, students in special education classrooms have limited interactions with other students in the school community.
The materials that I am requesting will help me create inclusive social clubs at PS 24. In order to improve peer relationships and communication, it is essential for school staff to be equipped with a variety of resources and interventions, tailored to meet the specific student needs. By creating clubs based on common interests, students with autism and their neurotypical peers will have greater opportunities to collaborate and interact with each other. Legos and trains are two activities that have broad appeal among many different students. The Lego and train clubs will be an opportunity to build connection and community among students with autism and their peers. Through the club activities, students will learn strategies for how to communicate with each other including active listening, initiating a conversation, and continuing a collaborative exchange. I am configuring inclusive groups of four to six peers to meet approximately 3 times per week to work on these skills throughout the 2024-2025 school year. The Legos and train toys that I am requesting will help create excitement and engagement among students who will be eager to explore these interactive and educational toys. These toys offer opportunities for open-ended play that is creative and adaptable. Moreover, the Lego and train clubs will offer special education and general educations students a chance to get to know each other and hopefully develop lasting friendships.
