Legitimizing Comics Through Diverse Graphic Novels

My students need access to diverse graphic novels such as Persepolis, Maus, American Born Chinese, and Pride of Baghdad in order to better represent the literary merit that comics contain.

My Students

I have the honor of being able to teach the inaugural Culture of Comic Books class here at my high school at the start of the 2018-2019 school year. They will be a mix of Juniors and Seniors.

These students come from diverse backgrounds, language ability, and home lives, but what unites them is their passion for alternative literature and their ability to look past the page and let their imaginations run free.

These students are eager to see their hobbies and passions legitimized and taken seriously in an elective, scholarly classroom setting. They want to prove that comic books are not just a low-brow interest but something that has true literary merit, along with being able to learn more about the process of creating comic books and graphic novels themselves.

My Project

The graphic novels selected are examples of diverse comic books with serious literary merit. Each student will be able to have access to an individual text in order to help them better access the classroom material. By having an individual text, students will also be able to better collaborate in their analysis by being able to experience the graphic novels individually and later bringing their ideas to a larger group.

These four graphic novels, Persepolis, American Born Chinese, Maus, and Pride of Baghdad, were specifically selected to be diverse in ethnicity & gender as well as in art style and text complexity in order to more broadly connect to the students in my classroom as well as being accessible to students with special needs and English Learner status.

Through the whole-class study of these texts, students will strengthen their analytical skills and utilize a wide array of skills that are outlined within the Common Core ELA standards such as the interpretation of fictional texts in different mediums and from diverse backgrounds.

But most importantly, these graphic novels were chosen because they represent the diversity that is in general lacking from the traditional English classroom with the focus on the established English canon. With these comic books, these graphic novels, my students will be able to see the diversity within themselves in what they are reading and will become more connected with their learning. It is difficult to provide access to these modern texts, so any support is utmost appreciated. Thank you so much!
