My Students

I teach English/language arts to more than one hundred seventh grade students. Our school is a Title One school in rural South Carolina where a significant portion of students are below the poverty line. My classes are composed of both high-achieving gifted and talented students, and struggling students that are often reading below grade level. Each of these groups have very unique needs in order to be successful, and each group needs encouragement and guidance to reach their individual potential.

My Project

Every year my favorite unit to teach is literature circles. This is a time where students get to choose their reading and actively engage in daily conversations with their peers about their reading. Not only do I love the conversations and analysis I get from these units, but I also love the engagement. One major reason my students are so engaged is the book options they're given each year. I work throughout the year to get highly engaging novels for them to choose from. These books are so engaging to my students, that they don't always get returned at the end of the year. So each year I'm in a position where I need to replace books to have enough. Let's give every child the chance to pick the perfect book for them!
