Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in Northern California. I teach 45 energetic first graders from Spanish speaking homes. The majority qualify for the free/reduced price food program. Some come from difficult circumstances such as broken families, poverty, health issues, learning disabilities, and language/cultural barriers.

"All students can learn and succeed, but not on the same day in the same way." -William G.

My bilingual and biliterate students come to class excited and eager to participate and become 21st century learners. Each student brings their unique style of learning that enhances our class community.

My Project

Reading aloud builds important foundational skills and helps students recognize what reading for pleasure is all about. It increases attention span and promotes bonding especially in light of coming back to school in person after distance learning. I chose books that highlight my student's Latinx culture so they see themselves represented in the rich illustrations as well as in the story.

Reading aloud motivates students to read.

When students see adults read, they are more likely to become readers. Students get to see and experience reading as something fun and positive. Listening to bilingual books will confirm the value of knowing two languages.
