Lecterns to Activate Learning

My students need to stand up often to activate their learning. Working at a foldable lectern will allow 4 students at a time to stand and work.

My Students

Learning about literature, writing, and improving vocabulary and grammar are the goals in my classroom. I have 110 students, in four different periods. We learn through reading, writing, moving, and collaboration. Having chances to do any of those skills while standing up improves the outcomes!

I have 110 ELA students, divided among 4 homerooms.

I have a couple of students who have a para supporting them while in my class. Most of my students are general education students, but the range of skills, interests, home-support, and motivation varies wildly. As often as I can I make efforts to differentiate, whether that means changing the delivery method, allowing for more time, having kids move around while they learn, or shortening the assignment-no matter what, I am always thinking of ways to reach the 110 different learners I have. Our school is large, with nearly 750 first through sixth graders. We have a diverse student body, and are always looking for ways to collaborate and learn from our students who are new to the neighborhood, the city, the state and the USA.

My Project

I have a 4-top round table at the back of my classroom, not getting much use at all. If I could add 2-3 lecterns to that table, and one more perhaps in another area around my classroom, I can offer more students the chance to stand up and still be able to read and write. The stable surface will hold books, spiral notebooks, binders, or hand-outs I give the kids. The workspace will just like a desk, but students who need to be able to move a bit, without disturbing the others around them, will have an opportunity to do their learning in a more suitable space.

Stand up lecterns will allow students in my class to be on their feet while they read, write, present, and continuously learn.

Often students need to move some part of their body to incorporate the learning more fully. Being able to stand at a lectern, to move from foot to foot, do knee bends while listening, and not bother students around them will improve my classroom management of certain students, while at the same time letting them learn just like the rest of the kids.
