Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
These current 5th graders are at home trying their best to stay afloat. They have been given optional paper packets or online resources to continue learning during this unprecedented time. They are working hard as they transition from elementary school to middle school.
What typically would be a memorable year because it is filled with firsts and lasts, has turned into a year of uncertainty.
Our 5th graders were not able to have the typical experience of touring a middle school and seeing what their next year would hold. They have not been able to experience lockers or any of the other transitional elements that take place from 5th grade to 6th grade.
These students have also not been able to celebrate the transition from elementary to middle school. They are missing the closure of the year and being able to say their final farewells.
My Project
It has been a tradition in our building that exiting 5th graders get to leave their mark by painting one of the tiles along the walls in the building. Since we are not in the building, we would like to be able to provide a tile and design materials to our students so they may still leave their mark in a different way. Students will design their tile and when everything is okay for us to recollect them, we will collect the art works and create a one of a kind master piece representing the 5th grade Class of 2020.
The locks for this project will allow our 5th graders to practice a much needed skill for success in middle school.
Typically, our students get to tour their base middle school and "live" the life of a 6th grade for part of a day. This allows them to feel more comfortable with transitioning and get some of the jitters out. Practicing lockers was always one of the things they would work on and they were unable to do that this year with being out of the building. We would like to provide the students with a lock of their own to practice while at home and all summer long, so they are less anxious when they return to their new settings.
