Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of our brilliant students are first and second generation immigrants, primarily from Mexico and Central America (we also have significant Asian and African-American populations). The mission of our school is to provide an excellent public education to students in order to expand their life choices.
We provide our students with a rigorous academic experience focused on health and bioscience.
We are committed to providing authentic learning experiences through project-based learning, field trips, and extensive health and science internship programs.
Almost all of the wonderful students at our school come from households where English is not the primary language. Developing academic literacy is a foundation we build with students in all subject areas, so they can grow as scholars.
My Project
I have my dream job: half of the day at my public 6-12 school I spend teaching middle school science and the rest of the day I work on reading intervention with small groups of students working hard to improve their literacy skills.
The list of items for this project may seem random, but they are not arbitrary!
Rather, these requested items are in response to the diverse, specific needs my students bring to the classroom.
Some of my excellent scholars need a laptop computer for its text-to-speech features and other accessibility features, which allow them to access material and express their ideas. Others need help focusing, thus the fidget toys. The Toobaloos assist my students with dyslexia to improve their grasp of sound-spelling relationships. The light covers are to reduce the over-stimulation florescent lights create for some students with autism. The markers help me create useful anchor charts for students to recall what they've learned and integrate it into their work.
Far from being eclectic, these materials are essential to helping all my students reach their huge potentials.
