Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students make me want to get out of bed and come to work every morning. A great group of scholars have have elected to challenge themselves with taking a college level statistics and/or microeconomics course while still in high school. They aim to attend and graduate from college (most of them as the first generation in their family to do so) and become STEM professionals. There are future doctors, engineers, actuaries, data analysts, environmental scientists, bankers and more sitting in my classroom every day.

These students are hungry to learn and they possess some serious grit.

Although in most cases, my students' family situations are currently challenging and they are living well below the poverty level, they have big plans for their own lives and refuse to let their zip code dictate the trajectory of their lives. They realize that a solid education is the key to financial independence and career success.

My Project

Last year I identified a wonderful new internet-based learning program [Albert io] which I successfully used with both my AP Statistics students as well as my AP Microeconomics students. The program allowed students to work through a variety of different problems. The questions were classified by topic as well as by level of difficulty. Students would attempt self-selected questions and complete teacher-created online quizzes. The program provided thorough explanations for incorrect responses as well as an item analysis for each student. This allowed me to create data-driven lessons that were developed with the needs of that particular set of students in mind. Additionally, there are a number of excellent applets and simulations that beautifully demonstrate concepts in both statistics and microeconomics for visual learners but require student access to technology.

While the Albert io program itself was amazing and the internet applets and simulations had strong instructional value, access to functioning technology at our school was a struggle; this project will allow these classes to have access to our own fully charged Chromebooks so that students are able to access the necessary technology when they need it.

My student's scores on mock exams improved when they had the ability to play around on their own with the applets, simulations and practice questions. We need a class set of Chromebooks and a mobile charging station to keep them organized, secure and charged.
