My Transitional Kindergarten class is filled with delightful little learners from our local area. My students are unique in that all of their birthdays fall between September 2 and December 2 of the current school year. My students have the opportunity to participate in a two year kindergarten program provided in the SB 1381 legislature, also known as the Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010. Transitional Kindergarten is only offered at selected sites within our district. I am the lucky teacher for one such site. At the end of the school year my studens will matriculate to their home schools for regular kindergarten next year. Fortunately for me, the majority of my little ones stay here at my elementary school and I get to be witness to their continued growth in kindergarten.
My Project
I like to make learning F-U-N! Learning Resources Alphabet Marks the Spot and LeapFrog Learning Leaping Letters are great interactive games for the students to learn and enjoy. Campbell's Alphabet Dice, Appletters, My First Bananagrams, Eureka Tub of Letter Tiles, and the Darcie Pop Beads will all provide hours of opportunities for students to have hands-on experience with manipulating letters. Once the students can identify the letters and sounds, CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words come next. An amazing experience would be to build words with the Didax CVC Word Builder Cards and Didax CVC Unifix Letter Cubes along with the Junior Learning CVC Word Builder Cards and Junior Learning CVC Blocks for Building Words. Now that we've learned short words, we will continue our quest and introduce short vowels with the Educational Insight Phonic Dominoes for Short Vowels. The TK students will have a great knowledge base as they head off to Kindergarten.
