My Students

Have you ever read something and when you were finished you had no idea what you had just read? Students in my classroom have this problem, yet when they listen to me read aloud they remember every word.

I have a classroom of high achieving and gifted students.

We are a military school, that has seen more than its share of separation and deployment in the past 10 years. My students read at a very high level, yet due in part to the stress in their lives, have a hard time focusing on what they read long enough to really understand more than just what is on the surface. This lack of understanding keeps them from meeting their full potential as readers.

My Project

Therefore I am requesting 4 iPod Nano devices to place in a listening station. With the iPod nano I can download audio books for the students to listen to. The nano is more favorable than tape/CD listening station, which we are currently using, because they are smaller and the number of books available to download is ever expanding.

Having an iPod listening station in our classroom would open my students to books that they might not read on their own.

It will also provide a model of fluent reading so necessary for comprehension. They students love to listen to me read, and when I read aloud in class they are able to relax and really get into the story. Having the iPods in class would provide another opportunity to get into the story, which in turn makes a better reader.
