My Project
As a reading teacher, I often hear how I am “a favorite teacher in a not favorite subject.” This isn’t something I take offense to, I get it. Reading is not many students’ favorite thing to do. I feel this is because they haven’t been allowed to really read things they enjoy. Students are given academic texts, short stories, poems, or other texts they rarely find interesting and are told they have to read it and show mastery.
While I understand this is a necessity on state testing and other benchmarks, I also think it’s important to show students they can apply these skills to everything they read, which includes novels they get to choose.
Students will be allowed to choose their books, which will be how groups are formed for their literacy circles. Students will read the books, use their skills to identify things such as figurative language, mood and tone, theme, and make connections. They will be working with students also reading the same book so they can build on what each other is saying, which will help them get to their higher level thinking.
It is my goal to make my class as enjoyable as possible, even if it’s not their favorite subject. One small step in doing this is by giving them the chance to read something they’ll enjoy, while having the expectation of showing skills. However, teaching at a Title 1 school means our school doesn’t have the funds to give this opportunity. By helping to fund this project, you’re helping me reach this goal. Thank you so much.
