Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My learning lab students are in grades K-5. All come from lower-income households, and 90% are second language learners. Despite this, they are hard workers and want to improve their fluency and comprehension skills. Despite the challenges of distance learning, they are very happy to be back in school (via Zoom) with their friends.
As we move to online learning, my goal is to utilize activities that are engaging, and challenging in playful ways, so they learn and practice important learning skills.
My Project
My students love playing with Legos. I want to give them Lego sets at home, so can learn through fun hands-on activities. This will allow them to practice important learning skills while they are playing and having fun.
By using the different color Lego bricks they will be able to practice language, memory, movement, creativity, and collaboration skills, while working along their classmates via zoom.
Using the Legos they will practice language skills by explaining the different designs, and how to describe a step-by-step task.
They will work on problem solving by remembering the challenge, setting goals, making plans to creatively create a solution and then self reflect on their own learning. They will also collaborate with their classmates either verbally or by using the zoom chat function.
