Learning with LEGOs

Help me give my students LEGO sets to work on team building skills, communication skills, and creativity.

My Students

Our day in the DPS library consists of a 25-30 minute lesson time followed by check out time. If time permits, students are allowed to go to centers: games, puzzles, dominoes, whiteboards, listening station, Osmo station, reading, STEM activities, etc.

Our school is in a diverse, rural setting with over 75%+ of students receiving free or reduced-rate lunch.

We serve grades K-3 and have 30 homerooms with an average of 21 students per class. Our enrollment is approximately 620 students. Each class has a variety of learning styles which I try to address during each lesson. Students are encouraged to work with others when encountering a problem during an assignment or activity. I often do group activities in order for lower level learners to have peers to work with. The students seem to enjoy the library atmosphere as I try to promote a captivating environment through the lessons being taught and when working with technology or during center time. The students are encouraged to work together and interact positively with each other.

My Project

As an educator I value the idea of children learning through play. The NAEYC states that "play is a child's context for learning. It gives them a place and a time for learning that cannot be achieved through completing a worksheet."

LEGOs are a great resource to use during hands-on lessons for students or during free play!

LEGO sets can be used to work on social skills, team building skills, and creativity skills. The use of them will also give kinesthetic learners a way to be engaged in the lesson. Having access to the LEGO sets in my project would give me a variety of options when creating lessons for students.

Aside from using them in lessons, the LEGO sets will also be placed in our Imagination Station for use during our station time. I currently have a small set of LEGOs in my Imagination Station and it is definitely the most chosen station. Access to more LEGOs would ensure that more students have an opportunity to experience learning through their use.
