Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students are reading far below grade level but are expected to know the content and are assessed on grade level. With 2 iPods, the students will not only be able to read independently but at their own pace and in a comfortable environment. The iPods will also allow the students to access podcasts.
Our school is a public school located in Los Angeles.
Our class is a self-contained special education class. The program title is Emotional Disturbance. Most of the students have poor impulse control and extremely poor peer relations, thus there is high importance of working independently and not being distracted. There are currently 8 student enrolled in the class. My students tend to do well with technology and hands-on activities. For this reason the iPods will assist with our reading program and get them excited about reading. Even with the label of emotionally disturbed, these students are genuinely great kids and just need the tools to channel their feelings and learn how to express themselves. Most of them have severe ADHD and working with iPods and earphones will sustain their attention.
My Project
I am requesting 2 iPods with the ability to download stories, slide shows and podcasts, allowing the students to hear the stories as they follow along with a hard copy. This will give the students the ability to access academic grade level content, allowing them to learn on an equal playing field as general education peers.
Because my students have multiple disabilities along with emotional disturbance, they often struggle academically.
They are working far below grade level and need to be given academic content in a variety of ways. Being that many are from low income families, they are unable to purchase technology to assist them with their learning. I try to provide them with as much as I can but with budget cuts, it's getting harder and harder. Thank you for your consideration!
