Children should love reading. Children should feel confident in their reading abilities. Not all of my twenty-seven kindergartners feel this way. As a teacher at Paul Revere School, I am committed to making each child love reading, and love themselves. However, I need help with this. My students are in desperate need of a new tape player/recorder and audio book sets for a listening center. A listening center contains a cassette player, five headphones and five of the same books. Students listen to a story, while following along in their own book. This engaging activity increases fluency, comprehension and confidence. It teaches students how print is organized, and how to read with enthusiasm and expression. Students can listen to the story repeatedly, which aids in their understanding of the material, and encourages them to join in reading with the words that they know, or have remembered. I want my students to be confident in their reading abilities, and this listening center would allow that. I am requesting Dr. Seuss book sets, because my students have not been exposed to literature that contains rhyming, predictability, and humor! Dr. Seuss is well known for his fun, rhyming texts, which promote literacy and a genuine love of reading. Dr. Seuss was my favorite author, and I would love to share my favorite books with my children. The new cassette player and Dr. Seuss book sets would serve as an additional classroom teacher. I would be able to work with a group of students, while the listening center is “working” with its own group of students. The listening center serves five students at a time, and each student in my class participates in the listening center every other day. These materials would give my students confidence in themselves and an enthusiasm for reading.
