Learning While Standing

Help me give my students a stand up magnetic design center for the library and discovery center.

My Students

My three-year-olds are some of the most amazing children I have ever met. They thrive while living in one of the most dangerous communities in our nation's capital. Some have gone through more in their young lives than many of us will ever have to endure in a lifetime. Now in the "new normal", they can't even escape to the sanctuary of school to escape the violence that riddles their neighborhood. Despite all of the challenges they face, they have still taken a leap into the unknown of virtual learning to begin their educational journey.

My students blossom with the educational and enrichment opportunities being offered, which helps them to build their background knowledge and exposes them to things they otherwise wouldn't be exposed to.

For all of them, school is where they have opportunities to build their academic and social foundations and set them up for success later in life.

My Project

My students love to play down on the rug, kneeling at a shelf, or standing at a shelf. Regardless of what they are playing with, they will find a way to play with it a level where they feel comfortable. Throughout our classroom though, we have no space where students have access to something that is magnetic at their level.

These magnetic stand up design boards will allow students to use magnetic materials at a level that is comfortable for them.

The design board for the discovery center will be used for students to explore with different magnetic STEAM activities such as tubes and tunnels, coasters, and gears. The design board for the library will be used for students to retell stories through magnetic pictures while also allowing them to write and draw their own story retellings. In both centers, students can use magnetic letters, numbers, and manipulatives to express their ideas and creativity.
