Learning While Balancing

My students need 5 balance balls and 5 support ball bowls while learning in my K-2 special education classroom. Balance balls improve focus, behavior and productivity.

My Students

I work with students with a variety of disabilities as a K-2 special education teacher. I have learned this past week that some of my students have challenges giving their full attention to learning and as a result are not reaching their potential to access the curriculum.

I am an elementary special education teacher in an urban area at a wonderful school, filled with very talented scholars.

My students have so many gifts and talents, but need other supports in place for them all to reach their full potential as scholars. I have students who have ADHD, Developmental Delays and other Specific Learning Disabilities. My students have expressed to me their love for school and thirst to learn math and reading! Just today I had my students in my classroom and they were off-task, but after sitting on my yoga ball that is at my desk they were able to stay on task and do some great work. I am extremely proud of them and am confident about the impact balance balls will have in my class and my students success.

My Project

The 5 balance balls and ball bowls will be placed in my special education classroom at the desks and by the rug. I will set clear expectations on the use of the balance balls and will hold my students accountable to keeping a safe and calm body. My students will be allowed to use the balls whenever they are in my class, either reading or working independently, taking an assessment, watching a SMARTboard lesson or just an everyday assignment or small group activity.

Donations for the 5 balance balls and ball bowls will improve my students engagement while in my class and when students are engaged, they are ready to learn.

Students are stimulated while on the ball and tend to lead to positive behaviors and increased productivity. I have a lot of goals and a rigorous curriculum to provide the students with and I need my students to be focused and attentive to the tasks at hand. I have seen the incredible ability for a student to bounce up and down while completing tasks.
